Are you worried about your child?
Play therapy offers a supportive, confidential and safe environment where children can openly express their feelings and work through challenges that are affecting their happiness. It opens the door for them to explore their emotions and discover new ways to grow into their best selves.
At times, even as adults, we struggle to articulate our emotions or explain what’s troubling us. For children, this can be even more challenging. They may not yet have the words to express their feelings or fully understand why they feel a certain way. However, they can express themselves through play.
Play is a natural and powerful way for children to communicate. It helps them make sense of their emotions, experiences, impulses, and behaviours. Through play, they can explore their sense of self and their potential.
Play Therapy is primarily non-directive and child centred. It’s a creative therapeutic approach that provides a safe and trusting environment where children can express themselves through play and various creative arts. In this space, they are able to explore difficult emotions and gain a deeper understanding of themselves. Play Therapy allows children to ‘act out’ their feelings in a secure and supportive setting, free from judgment.
Some children and adolescents feel more comfortable talking. Creative counselling blends traditional talking therapy with creative activities, offering a person-centred approach to explore thoughts and feelings in a supportive therapeutic relationship. It shares many principles with play therapy while being informed by person-centred talking therapy techniques.
When words aren’t enough to describe inner conflict, creative mediums can offer an alternative means of expression. Through the use of art, clay, sand, movement, or visualization, emotions can be expressed non-verbally before being processed further with the guidance of the therapist.
Creative counselling sessions can vary; some may focus on conversation, while others engage in creative expression. The choice is always with the child or young person, within the safe and non-judgmental boundaries of the therapeutic relationship.
