Parenting can be challenging. The demands of modern society can make it difficult to raise happy and capable children, often leaving parents feeling drained or even discouraged. I offer support to parents by discussing effective parenting strategies, helping them understand the stages of child development and how best to support their children, and suggesting activities that encourage playful parenting.
When working with individual children in Play Therapy, I also emphasise the importance of fostering positive relationships with their parents. Together, we set goals or desired outcomes for the therapy and use these to assess the effectiveness of the sessions.
"Parents as Partners" is a component of Trauma Play that focuses on working with parents. It involves exploring different parenting styles and reflecting on how best to support everyone within the family dynamic. This aspect of family support works with the adults in the child's or teenager's life and can be used to support the entire family, either alongside or independently of therapy for the child or teen.
Parents as Partners sessions are designed for adults only, often conducted alongside or following child or teen therapy. However, these sessions can also stand alone, offering a space for adults to reflect on their parenting or caregiving approaches. These sessions involve only the adult(s) and the therapist, without the child being present.
